Solidarity - from human dignity to transnational cooperation

The walls of the historical "Sala BHP" of the Gdańsk Shipyard, located at  Jerzy Popiełuszko Street in Gdańsk witnessed the signing of the August Agreements in 1980, which led to the creation of Solidarność and was a milestone on the way to freeing Poland from the influence of the Soviet Union. In 2019, these walls hosted an event co-organized by the International Center for Research on the Phenomenon of Solidarity (a research unit at the Faculty of Philosophy of the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Krakow) for the second time.

This time, thanks to the efforts of KK NSZZ "Solidarność" and the Executive Board of MCBFS, an international scientific working conference entitled "Solidarity: From Human Dignity to Transnational Cooperation" took place. The conference was co-financed by the National Center for Culture as part of the "Kultura-Interventions 2019" program and by the KK NSZZ "Solidarność".

The afternoon session was the internal work of the Center's Scientific and Program Council, which met for the first time. These sessions were led by the Director of the Board of theCenter, Fr. prof. Wladyslaw Zuziak. It was possible to adopt the regulations for the work of the Scientific and Program Council and its presidium, and to elect members of this body. The chairman of the Presidium of the Scientific and Program Council was unanimously elected prof. Rocco Buttiglione, his deputy Fr. prof. Piotr Mazurkiewicz and secretary Dr. Paulina Bednarz-Łuczewska.

Until late in the evening, the Scientific and Program Council worked in three working sections in the following areas: (1) Human dignity - postmodern societies and the social teaching of the church (2) Ethics of solidarity as a universal experience capable of transforming social relations (3) Culture of solidarity. The labor movement as a source of a new transnational culture. All participants listened to the reports on the work in the sections the next morning. The aim of the conference was to prepare a program resolution of the MCBFS, whose task is to set the directions of development of the Center for the coming years.

After two days of hard work, this goal was achieved. The second day was entirely devoted to drafting the resolution. On November 9, shortly after 7 pm, after long discussions and many changes, the first program resolution of the MCBFS was unanimously adopted. After the necessary technical corrections, it is available on the MCBFS website and its ambitious postulates are transformed into specific projects by the Executive Board of the Centre.

The next meeting of the Scientific and Program Council is planned in five years at the latest. The organizers would like to thank everyone involved in the preparation of the conference, both on the side of the Pontifical Univrsity of John Paul II in Krakow and the KK NSZZ "Solidarność" and members of the Scientific and Program Council, for their invaluable intellectual input.
